Festival Founder and Director, Shirley Vermillion, started the street festival of arts & music in 2010 on 1/2 block of Prince George Street after moving to Williamsburg, VA from Seattle in 2001, and deeply missing the vibrant arts, cultural, live music & street festival scene in the Pacific Northwest. She loved how street festivals unify a community, even in huge cities like Seattle and Portland and saw the importance of such a commUNITY event in Williamsburg, for all ages, local families and tourists to enjoy. In 2007(when the youngest of her 4 sons was 1.5 yo), she'd started organizing First Colony Art Bazaars in her neighborhood, showcasing some of her talented neighbors, who she'd discovered were artists, artisans and authors... and while the events were well attended and successful(she did 3 a year in Spring, Summer & Fall for Holiday shopping) , she always dreamed of having a street festival in downtown Williamsburg, where it'd be easy for folks to dine at local restaurants and dessert establishments and then meet the local artists, peruse & purchase their art and meet/hear our talented local and regional musicians! She reached out to long time friend, Chef David Everett from the Blue Talon Bistro for help maneuvering the process of event permitting with the City of Williamsburg, after enjoying many of their Free Outdoor Movie Nights on Prince George St with her family. She asked "Have you all ever considered having an arts festival on the street before the Movie Nights?" He said "No, but we'll be happy to help you if you'd like to!" His team at the time, of Adam Steely(Owner/General Manager of Blue Talon and Owner of Illy Coffee on Duke of Gloucester St), Chef Scott Hoyland (Owner/Chef of Culture Cafe), and Michael Claar(General Manager of Alewerks Brewing) were instrumental in making the debut of 2nd Sundays a smooth and successful one! Now in it's 16th season, she, her 4 sons, significant others and a small group of LoveLight Placemaking(our 501 (c)(3)) 's staff & volunteers still tend to all details of the festival! Come out and feel the distinct warmth and welcome of 2nd Sundays Williamsburg!
