Hazelnut Growers Collective
Vendor
The Hazelnut Growers Collective consists of three hazelnut orchards owned and managed independently. All farms have planted new blight resistant cultivars of hazelnuts and are members of the BC Hazelnut Growers Association (BCHGA).
Longtime shoppers at Vancouver Farmers Markets will remember shopping with Peter Andres of Poplar Grove Arbour. Since 2017 he has planted a new orchard under the name of Peaceful Green Acres. Peter has been growing for about 40 years and selling hazelnuts for 27 years. Currently he farms approximately 2 acres of hazelnuts on his 40 acres in Agassiz. His main crop is the larger Jefferson variety of hazelnuts with more smaller Yamhill and McDonald coming on stream. Peter's adult children Mike and Monica are excited to have joined the Collective at the market. You can reach out to Peter or Mike for advance ordering of hazelnut flour although limited amounts are available at most markets. They are also marketing Chocolate covered Roasted Hazelnuts for special holidays.
Durieu Hazelnuts, farmed by Rebecca Mount and Beth Bouchir, is located just north of Mission on approximately 12 acres. Their main crop is the Yamhill variety, often referred to as the Candy Nut, which is the variety found inside a Ferrero Roche candy. The nut is smaller than Jefferson and very sweet. Beth is experimenting with flavoured hazelnuts and hazelnut brittle so watch for some new additions to our market table.
Bryana Bouchir operates CandyJack Acres in Whonnock, located between Maple Ridge and Mission. This is the youngest farm in our collective, with the first trees having been planted in the fall of 2018. Bryana also grows the Yamhill variety of hazelnut on her farm and is excited to have brought her first small harvest of in-shell nuts to Winter 2024 markets. Bryana believes healthy, living, soil is the key to healthy trees and a nutritious food supply.
