Having lived in many places and climates throughout his military career, Jeff likes to use locally sourced and produced materials wherever he is, and even collects wood on road trips. In Florida, his current work starts with exotic hardwood strips reclaimed at a mill in Sarasota, approximately 4’ long and 1” square. He glues the strips together, clamping with strong pipe clamps to compensate for twists and warping in the strips, to form 12” wide planks. The planks are milled, cut, and shaped using traditional as well as modern woodworking techniques into many sizes and shapes of artistic boards and original carvings. He embellishes some of his work with figures or surfaces burned into the wood with pyrography. He finishes most of his work with a food-safe, all natural oil finish also produced in Florida.
