About

In Connecticut there are no landfills any more so all of our trash gets incinerated in Bridgeport and Hartford. It is estimated that 41.7% of our trash is food waste, yard waste, and compostable paper. In New Haven, households alone produce about 200 tons of food scraps per week and the City of New Haven pays $85 per ton of trash to be hauled and incinerated. The city is paying to create environmental pollution instead of keeping that money in our own economy to create jobs here at home.

At the same time, urban and rural farmers are challenged to produce significant yields to cover high production costs. To avoid soil degradation and the use of inorganic fertilizers, every organic farmer must build long-term soil fertility by feeding the soil with a variety of natural amendments.

Peels & Wheels Composting was created in partnership with New Haven Farms, Inc.,a non-profit that promotes health and community development through urban agriculture, with the shared understanding that transforming organic waste into compost for urban and rural farms and gardens is an opportunity to improve the quality of our air and soil, and grow more food for our community. Peels and Wheels is closing the loop by recovering food scraps and turning them back into rich compost to be used locally to grow healthy food while simultaneously combatting air pollution in our community.

Production Practices

Once per week, our collectors ride bikes, with trailers attached, to our 100+ customers' homes to pickup their food waste and transport it to our Phoenix Press Farm site for composting. There we professionally process the organic waste by mixing it with leaves and wood chips in the proper ratio. We add it to our aerated system where it decomposes aerobically to produce quality compost in 60 days. The compost is used to enhance the soil for New Haven Farms sites and other urban farms and community gardens, with surplus compost available to interested participating households.
