S and S Acres

We are S and S Acres located in Colfax, IA featuring Donna Jean's Old-Fashioned Rolls in our Country Store on site during events and made to order online at sandsacres.com in the Country Store section. Donna Jean's Old-Fashioned Rolls are homemade and hand-rolled from scratch with fresh, local ingredients.
Our delicious rolls are named after their creator our later mother Donna Jean. Mom grew up in Indianola, IA and was the eldest girl in a family of 12. It was her job to help Grandma Lela with the cooking and baking. As a young girl, with Grandma Lela's instruction, she learned to make meals for the family including delicious, made from scratch, baked goods.
Donna Jean raised her six children in Milo, IA as a single mother. Even though we didn't have a lot as kids growing up mom always managed to make meal time special. We would all sit down at the table and pass each delicious dish around filling our plates with great delight. On special occasions she would make the most delicious Old-Fashioned dinner rolls which were definitely the family favorite. As grown children we continued to gather at mom's place for Sunday dinners and Holidays with each meal featuring mom's wonderful, Old-Fashioned Rolls. When mother was in Hospice in 2018 and near the end we promised her that we would continue to keep her family traditions alive. After she passed I took over her role and started hosting family gatherings at S and S Acres. A family member mentioned that they sure missed mom's old-fashioned rolls. At that moment I realized I had to bring her rolls back into our family traditions. I had a difficult task before me as Mom never used a recipe, but finally after two years of trying and tasting her recipe was perfected.
Donna Jean's Old-Fashioned Rolls were such a big hit that we decided to offer them for sale so other families could enjoy them. We decided to create a Caramel Roll using her recipe as a base. Those went over so well that we decided to add Cinnamon. We now we have 9 different flavors to choose from with new flavors coming in the Fall of 2023.
It brings us great joy to be able to share our mother's Old-Fashioned Rolls with other families to enjoy. We feel truly blessed to be able to honor her in this way.
