The Cedar Rapids Police Department has participated in the Explorer/Cadet Program for over 50 years. It is one of the oldest posts in the United States.
Cedar Rapids Police Explorer Post #107 was organized in February 1966 and chartered as a “Law Enforcement Explorer Post” with the Boy Scouts of America. And recently switched to Cedar Rapids Public Safety Cadet Unit #107 this year! This a diverse youth group interested in law enforcement. The Explorers provide services around the community. It is a great learning tool to see what police officers do on a day-to-day basis.
Today, there are many members within the post from various backgrounds throughout the Cedar Rapids area with a common interest in law enforcement. During meetings, Cadets cover topics including; arrest and search procedures, accident investigation, bomb threat response, burglary in progress protocols, crime scene search, hostage and crisis negotiation, domestic abuse investigation, shooting scenarios, first aid, traffic stop procedures, white collar crime investigation, firearms practice, and vehicle maneuvering procedures.
Officer Shawn Burke and Officer Dan Kent, current Cedar Rapids Police Department Officers, are the advisors. They receive assistance from many other police officers and community members.
