Refemme
Vendor
At Refemme we strive for textile waste diversion through garment repair, mending, upcycling and alterations. Gabriela, the founder and Seamstress, promotes the Mending principles through workshops hosted at creative studios such as The Scrappy Elephant and The Annex at Bluebird in Crozet, VA.
Also, Refemme has been present every month at local Boutiques like DarlingxDashing to offer In-store alterations and clothing repair services as an effort to combat the Fast Fashion pollution.
Gabriela Romo
Hi!
This is Gabriela, the face behind Refemme and the hands behind the seams. I am a Fashion enthusiast and an avid thrift shopper. My background in Fashion dates back to the origin of my first clothing brand back in Mexico during my college years.
I started Refemme after having my very own "Slow Fashion awakening" that led me to a whole year free of buying new clothes, which mixed with my sewing skills led me to create Refemme. A brand that promotes a more consciences way to dress, an initiative that strives to reduce the stigma around getting your clothes altered or fitted but most importantly: a community that shares the vision for a world free of textile waste. A world where we care more for the planet and the clothes we already own.
When I moved to town in August 2022, I started volunteering at Twice is Nice sorting clothing donations and for me it was eye opening to see the amount of clothes that were being donated due to small flaws like missing buttons, torn seams, rips and holes. I thought about the difference that it would make if more people knew how to sew back a button or some of the principles to approach this common repairs.
That is how the Visible Mending Workshops started across town, with the one desire to let everyone know that "Mended is the new black". That there is nothing wrong with having our clothes mended and that there is actually joy in owning every single rip, patch, hole and stains in our jeans. Mending clothes is not only an act of love but a way to counterattack the pollution the fashion industry produces as the second most polluting industry in the world.
