ButterQueen Bakery is a mobile black-owned and woman-owned bakery specializing in made-from-scratch southern style pound cakes, brownies and treats. —Our bakery stems from southern family tradition, so we place a high importance on people and how our tasty desserts make people feel. Sharing our desserts bring forth good memories with great people and create space for new memories and community.
Our grandma introduced us to the world of baking at a young age with her recipes and baking techniques. This eventually led to us baking as a fun hobby for friends, family, and small community events. Due to demand, we turned the hobby into a business.
Grandma gave us a cool nickname in the kitchen decades ago, so we thought it'd be a fitting name for the business she inspired. Her ButterQueen. Remember, if there's no butter (or vegan butter), did you really eat cake?
Our mission is to curate great tasting southern desserts, source local ingredients, and empower marginalized communities.

Shai Sumpter, owner of ButterQueen Bakery, is a self taught licensed baker from southern Virginia with over 21 years of experience making her loved cakes and treats. She had no idea her childhood moments baking with her grandma would one day turn into a successful business. Shai started out using the recipes grandma taught her, then she began creating her own flavor profiles and bringing the pound cakes to work events and celebrations with friends. Soon, Shai began receiving order requests for birthday cakes, weddings, and other celebrations. With some encouragement from her community and grandma, Shai started ButterQueen Bakery in 2021. So, the bakery you see today, is the result of a grandma's love poured into her little ButterQueen.
