We create healthy growing conditions on our farm through maintaining soil health, attending to plant nutrition, adequately spacing crops, irrigating, providing pollinator habitat, stewarding riparian zones, integrating pastured sheep with our perennial crops, and physically excluding pests from vulnerable annual vegetables with row covers. We are a low-till farm, and grow some crops like garlic in a completely no-till system. We only use OMRI-listed products. Our seed saving practice is an indirect method of pest control by selecting for seeds that are adapted to conditions, and therefore less vulnerable to pests, harmful bacteria (leaf spot) and fungi (mildew, molds).
Marisa Barone and Ian Nichols
We are young farmers and experienced year-round CSA and market growers. 2023 will be our first growing season at Meltwater Farm.
After running 2 full-time farms in 2 different states for 5 years (2017-2021), we were able to buy land in Argyle, NY. We have taken a year to work off-farm in the community as we have made improvements to the house and farm infrastructure, and will transition back into full-time agriculture for the 2023 season.
We sold diversified, (uncertified) organic vegetables and greens year-round at both the Chappaqua and Hastings, NY farmers markets from 2019-2020, and at the New Bedford, MA farmers' market from 2017-2018. In 2023, we are continuing to grow what we know, (year-round greens and vegetables), in addition to lamb, raspberries, and eventually asparagus and small fruits as our plantings mature.
We are climate-conscious, truly enjoy our work, and believe in doing good for people and planet. Marisa (only part-time at Meltwater in 2023) works for a rural food access organization in our area, and prioritizes accessibility in accepting food assistance dollars and opportunities for food education at market.
