About

Adey's, the Tigrinya word for Mom, is the celebration of centuries of knowledge about coffee, spices and food shared from mothers to daughters - all the way from Eritrea to right here in D.M.V. The products sold are made locally in Springfield, VA. For many years the founder of Adey's, Azieb Desta, used food as a way to gather people in her community. The result was that each meal shared amongst them was rarely just a delicious dinner or decadent home-roasted cup of coffee, but an avenue for a meaningful conversations and actionable action to address the issues most pressing among her neighbors and friends. The vision for Adey's is to bring these dinner-side conversations to the public and to create a community-centric brand that uplifts local goods, local stories and local causes- one jar of tesme (butter) and one bag of coffee at a time.

Azieb Desta
Hi, My name is Azieb Desta. I've been in Virginia for nearly 40 years. I'm many things - a mom, a daughter, a long-time restaurant worker. But despite all the years I have spent working in kitchens and inviting people over to enjoy large meals in my home, I only recently considered myself to be a real food entrepreneur. According to my daughter this is "imposter syndrome." When you rarely see yourself in spaces where big decisions are made, you subconsciously start to believe you aren't capable of being in those spaces. Well, it took a while, but I'm thrilled to present Adey's to the public. I hope my products will showcase not only my appreciation for my Eritrean heritage but it will celebrate the value of community and show that you are never, ever "too old" to start pursue your passions and talents. The products I am selling - Tesme, Kemem, home-roasted coffee beans - are all based off recipes that have been passed down to me from my own Adey (Mom) - but with slight tweaks made. Within the next year I hope to expand Adey's to include more fresh cooked items and to expand my coffee selection for the public. I also hope to partner with more local farmers and producers to expand the impact of local sourcing.
