Mesquite Country Beef is a multigenerational family ranch located in central Texas with over 100 years of combined agricultural experience. Our knowledge set is wide ranging, from grass and rangeland management, to animal welfare and husbandry, to ag economics, and agricultural education. Our passion is agriculture and the land, and that shows in the quality of beef we produce. We use regenerative grazing practice to keep our land exceptionally healthy which in turn means we have exceptionally healthy cattle. We have also spent the last 18 years carefully crossbreeding cattle to produce animals that are highly efficient on our central Texas pastures and well as having excellent meat quality. The result has become a highly sustainable beef cattle ranch, which we are very proud of.
We use rotational grazing and regenerative practices to mimic the symbiotic relationship of bison and native rangeland grasses. This has produced pastures that have a healthy soil structure and microbiome. As a result our land is very productive with minimal weed control and inputs by us. We strive to understand the ecosystem which our cattle live and work with nature to make sure that the ecosystem, wildlife, and cattle all thrive.
We have carefully crossbred three cattle breeds over the last 18 years with the intention of producing a herd that is hardy, efficient on grass, forages a wide variety of natural fodders, moderately sized, and has excellent meat quality. We have used Santa Gertrudis, Texas Longhorn, and American Aberdeen cattle in our breeding program and have bred a heard that exemplifies the best of all three of these beautiful breeds of cattle. These animals are naturally healthy, very well suited to their environment and produce beef that is high in nutrient density, tender, and flavorful.
Watkins Family
We are a family ranch and have two generations living and working full time on the ranch. Larry and Kim are our founders and the backbone of our team. Our ranch has been a lifelong dream of both of them and have worked tirelessly to make that dream happen. They have passed that passion on to their kids, Lynn and James, who both live and work on the ranch as well. Larry and Kim both have degrees and long work experience in several agricultural sectors, Lynn has two degrees in agricultural education from Texas A&M University with over 10 years of work experience on our ranch, and James has a degree in Computer Systems and Technology as well as work experience in transportation and logistics. We combine our talents wherever they are needed in our business and believe that there is always more for us to learn.
