Kaitlin Knapp is an artist living and working in Richmond, Virginia, and is the founder of Knapping Press. Since its start in 2020, Knapping Press has created cards and artworks that are inspired by the natural world, both in subject matter and in technique. Out of a desire to create more sustainably and with colors that were found in nature, Kaitlin began creating dyes from items around the house: coffee, steeped teas, onion skins, and avocado skins. Seeing what colors could be pulled from nature thrilled and delighted Kaitlin and cemented her interest in working almost exclusively with natural dyes. The rich salmon color that is extracted from avocado skins is one of Kaitlin’s favorites, and thankfully isn’t terribly difficult to make. Kaitlin is driven by making artworks of the things she loves the most — scenes from and inspired by nature.
