About

DCTMI was founded in 2016 to create a campaign to get a tutor or mentor for the 2 out of 3 DC students -- 60,000+ -- who are reading below grade level or who have other academic or non-academic needs. We raise awareness and recruit volunteers at farmers markets and other outdoor public spaces and events as well as through social media and outreach to employers, congregations, and groups. When people sign up with us, we match them to one of our 50+ nonprofit partner organizations based on when and where the volunteer is available, whether they prefer to help elementary, middle, or high school students, and any preferences or skills.

Manager

Tom Pollak
Tom has spent his career working and volunteering in the DMV and Baltimore nonprofit sectors to build stronger communities, strengthen nonprofits, serve children and youth, and conduct policy research on health care and environmental issues. In 2016, he left the Urban Institute to formally launch DCTMI and its parent nonprofit organization, the 501(c)(3) Civic Leadership Project, with the belief that people CAN work together successfully to tackle the tough civic challenges that communities and our nation face if we work together over the long haul with commitment, empathy, and wisdom.
