About

Barajas Produce is a sustainable farm located in Montross, Virginia. Established in 2001, cofounded and operated by the Barajas Family. From the start, our primary goal was to use the best farming practices and take great care of the land we work.
We started with one acre of land behind our house with no heavy machinery. Our main crops at the time were a few plants of tomatoes, cucumbers, and watermelon. Throughout the years, with the help of customers and knowledge, we were able to diversify our crops allowing us to target various ethnic groups with our produce. With that said, we have acquired more land and farm equipment to make work less labor-intensive.
Our help has dramatically increased around the farm in the last three years. From only being run by the Barajas family members for the past couple of years to having the honor of hiring five H2A helpers to help facilitate work around the farm throughout the primary season.

Production Practices

Integrated Pest Management

Sustainable farming : Plastic Mulch- Reduces weeds, and help with water retention. Raised Beds- Helps control diseases and helps with the drainage of water (helps with the prevention of fungus) Use low Toxicity sprays- We ONLY SPRAY AS NEEDED. Utilize Nutrient Management Plans- we test our soil every year to manage fertility and to help us control/prevent any diseases. Plant Testing: When it comes down to our crops presenting any disease, we test the plant tissue to get down to the problem Crop Rotation-We rotate our crops continuously. We are very picky when it comes to planting certain varieties. We plant varieties that will do great in a particular season to limit or prevent us from using any pesticides. Drip Tape Irrigation Weeding- Everything is either manual or mechanical weeding. We DO NOT use roundup near any of our crops. Fertilizers-We use your conventional fertilizer, which you can find in any hardware store which includes osmocote and 10x10x10. Currently, none of our crops have any pesticides. We tend to start spraying in the brutally hot months. We only spray our squash, tomatoes, and pepper plants. We tend to spray them with 7up, which you can also find in any hardware store. Our primary goal is to get rid of the stink bugs that damage the appearance of our produce.
