Popular legend in Ireland says that the Christian cross was introduced by Saint Patrick or possibly Saint Declan. It has often been claimed that Patrick combined the symbol of Christianity with the symbol of the sun to give potential followers an idea of the importance of the cross. Linking the Cross with the idea of the life-giving properties of the sun, was meant to appeal to those who followed the traditional Celtic nature religion. The Celtic knot patterns, because they are meant to have no beginning or ending, represent the concept of eternity.
