Philip Nguyen
Philip Nguyen is the founder of Let’s Roll Limited Liability Company, doing business as The Corner Rolls. In his spare time, he expresses his passion for food on his YouTube channel.
Philip studied mathematics at The University of the Pacific. He started to pursue his early professional career as a Tax Technician I with the State of California Department of Taxes and Fees Administration. Philip was quickly promoted to Tax Technician II and then promoted to Statewide Compliance and Outreach Representative, promoting above Tax Technician III. The Statewide Compliance and Outreach Program allowed Philip to physically visit thousands of businesses in all different industries. As much as he loved his job, Philip realized that the quality of his life was more important; he decided to leave everything behind with empty pockets to follow his dream and start a new beginning in Hawai’i.
Thanks to a referral from friends, Philip contacted Pamela Boyar, the managing director of Living Breath LLC, dba FarmLovers Farmers Markets. Pamela gave Philip the opportunity to join the Farmers’ Market, asking if he could start in a week, right after taste-testing the rolls. Philip started The Corner Rolls selling a variety of unique fusion and traditional Vietnamese spring rolls at the Kakaako Farmers’ Market, which sold out on the first day. The Corner Rolls was featured in Honolulu Magazine, Frolic Hawaii, by the legendary Thomas Obungen. Soon The Corner Rolls was on KHON2, where Philip was interviewed by the one and only, Dallis Ontiveros. The Corner Rolls has received 2023 Certificate of Excellence from Restaurant Guru. In 2023, Philip received a full scholarship towards the Cottage Industry to Commercial Enterprise Program (ʻĀina to Mākeke Program.)
While volunteering as treasurer of the Vietnamese Student Association, Philip gained insight into how food can bring people together and enrich the experience of culture. Thus, his passion for food was born, and history is in the making. When Philip sees satisfied customers nodding and smiling after their first bite or hears about how the family shared The Sampler and fought over the last piece, this warms his heart, and he knows he is on the right path.
Philip loves to watch MasterChef. He is entertained watching the home chefs artistically create masterpieces that not only look amazing but also please the judges. Philip enjoys swimming, camping, snowboarding, and hiking. He has even jumped out of an airplane on a spontaneous tandem skydiving trip! Shake my head, what an adrenaline junkie?!
Philip overcame the struggles of moving to a new state with no friends or family during a time of uncertainty—the COVID-19 pandemic. Through perseverance, he built his self-confidence and broke down barriers.
Philip is beyond grateful for all those who were able to help out, whether it was taking pictures of the rolls, hashtagging and posting/reposting on social media, sticking logo stickers on boxes, sharing kitchens, or giving him the right referrals. Philip’s business and life partner has been a solid rock, someone he can trust and rely on, giving him the foundation he needs to strive and grow, personally, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
