About

Monkey Run Mycology is owned and operated by Brad Moore and A.J. Gonzalez. We are two life long friends that share a passion for hiking and spending time in the woods surrounded by the beauty of nature. Through that passion we discovered a love for identifying and collecting wild edible mushrooms. Not content to only enjoy the amazing flavors textures and health benefits of our local wild mushrooms when the weather conditions matched up perfectly with our schedules; we found a new hobby and began cultivating mushrooms at our homes and small farm. Our goal is to share our love for these locally available delicacies, and inspire others to get out in nature and learn how fungi plays in an important role in the food web.

Production Practices

Extended Growing Season Non Gmo Permaculture Design

We collect spores from locally harvested wild mushrooms, we then grow those spores in sterile laboratory conditions, so that we can innoculate farm by-products, grow farm raised wild mushrooms, and then return the by products to the land as a substrate for wild mushroom propagation and soil remediation. We are certified for mushroom toxicology and identification, our certification is recognized by New York State various other States, Cornell University, and was developed by Mushroom Mountain L.L.C.

A.J. grew up in Schenectady, NY and and never thought farming was in his future. That was until he met the love of his life who happened to be a farm girl. Now A.J. lives 'on the farm' in Selkirk with his beautiful wife Erin and two boys Logan and Alexander. A.J. and his family balance their love for tradition and the modern by operating a small farm that provides both food and real world experience for their growing family, .
Brad is a Voorheesville native, that hit the lottery when he decided to make the move to South Bethlehem where he was introduced to his beautiful wife Mindy by his matchmaking neighbor. Brad, Mindy and their adorable daughter Theadora still reside in South Bethlehem and love their community that brought them together. Brad has an extensive background in food processing and mechanics, he brings that experience to bear while designing and creating the tools and practices we use to enjoy gourmet mushrooms year round.
