About

Located in Alexandria, the Veteran Farmer Program Co-op is an agricultural cooperative between Farmer Jennie, a 15-year Marine Corps veteran, and Farmer Megan, a military spouse and former public servant. They grow vegetables, herbs, and fruit, as well as stunning cut flowers using pollinator-friendly, beyond organic practices. With over four years of combined farming experience, both farmers are graduates of the year-long Veteran Farmer Reserve Program and both subsequently completed year-long Veteran Farm Fellowships at the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture.

Production Practices

Use Only Organic Materials Holistic Management Crop Rotation Cover Crops Low Till Perennial Crops

A stone's throw from Dogue Creek in Alexandria tucked between the tree lines of Fort Belvoir and Richmond Highway, Farmer Jennie and Farmer Megan grow biointensive vegetables, herbs, fruit, and cut flowers using hand tools and limited mechanized input along with pollinator-friendly, beyond organic practices. Farmer Megan is proud to grow nutrient-dense seasonal vegetables, herbs and fruit while Farmer Jennie grows a vast array of stunning blooms and specialty herbs. The farmers utilize worm castings, compost, and foliar teas produced on the farm and apply OMRI listed amendments and fertilizers to the soil. Zero (synthetic or organic) pest/insect/herb-"icides" are applied. The farmers' goals are to build biologically active soils that maintain a healthy rotation of plants and repel pests, to maintain living roots (cash, cover, and perennial crops) in the soil as often as possible to minimize weed pressure and prevent erosion, and to create a variety of pollinator and beneficial insect habitats to encourage diversity on the land.
