Big Year Coffee: A Conservation-focused Roastery & Bakehouse:
Big Year Coffee brings you exceptional, small-batch specialty coffee with a direct conservation mission. 100% of our single-origin beans and cocoa products are Smithsonian Bird Friendly® and organically grown under native forest canopies that protect vital migratory bird habitats. We roast our beans to highlight their natural sweetness and complexity, pairing them perfectly with our fresh, home-baked market treats. Simple, sustainable, and meticulously crafted, it’s coffee that tastes great and does genuine good for the planet.
Permaculture Design Integrated Pest Management Non Gmo Use Only Organic Materials
Our coffee production practices are strictly anchored by the highest benchmark in environmental agroforestry: 100% Smithsonian Bird Friendly® certified sourcing. This rigorous framework requires a minimum of 40% canopy shade cover and a 12-meter canopy height composed of at least 10 distinct native tree species. This intentional permaculture design actively mirrors a natural forest ecosystem rather than a sun-grown monoculture, preserving vital over-wintering habitats for migratory songbirds.
By keeping the forest canopy completely intact, our sourcing relies entirely on nature's own integrated pest management. A thriving, diverse wild bird population acts as a built-in pest defense system, managing insects and restoring a natural predator-prey balance. Additionally, because Bird Friendly certification builds directly upon strict organic prerequisites, it guarantees 100% non-gmo crops and the use of only organic materials, completely eliminating synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers from farm to cup. By allowing the coffee cherries to mature slowly under native shade trees, these ecological practices naturally yield denser, sugar-saturated specialty beans—proving that meticulous environmental protection and elite coffee quality go hand in hand.
