James Oliver was established in 1995 under the name Black Bear Micro Roastery in Tuftonboro New Hampshire by Annie and Jim Clark. In 2019 Miranda Clark and her husband acquired the company from Miranda’s father and moved the production to Detroit, David’s hometown.
They renamed the Company in honor or Miranda’s father James Oliver Clark III. David’s first act of business was to create the coffee blend Alma Mater which gives the proceeds to the Detroit Public Schools Community Fund as his mother is a retired DPS teacher.
Produced in a USDA, department of Agriculture approved facility.

Miranda is a second generation coffee roaster and during the day teaches photography at University Prep in Detroit. David has been in specialty coffee for over a decade. Both live and work in Detroit.
