Literacy Connexus empowers community and faith-based organizations to promote literacy. We are a growing network of leaders, volunteers, and partners working together to provide support and direction to literacy projects throughout the state of Texas, using resources from—as much as is possible—the local community. Our summer reading program, "What's for Lunch?" is centered in Waco, TX. This initiative aims to enhance reading preparation for preschool-age children and to mitigate summer learning loss among low-income elementary school students, increasing the likelihood that participants will read proficiently by 3rd grade. We leverage existing distribution channels for addressing summer hunger (e.g., free summer meal sites and food pantries) to eliminate barriers to book access and support family reading practices among food-insecure households.
