About

moheji is a Philadelphia based Japanese food start up. We are introducing a traditional Japanese dish "Onigiri" rice balls which are made with lightly salted rice, filled with savory ingredients (grilled salmon, pickled vegetable, spicy chicken etc...), gently formed into triangles and wrapped in a sheets of crispy nori seaweed. Onigiri can be a snack or a meal itself and has been a popular go-to dish for Japanese people for centuries. It is simple, versatile, well-balanced and satisfying. We believe Onigiri is a healthy alternative lunch option catering to a wide variety of tastes in Philadelphia.

moheji is owned by me, a Japanese mom. As a mother of two, my main concern has always been how to prepare healthy meals for my growing children. It was challenging to find Japanese ingredients, so recreating traditonal dishes I grew up with was a struggle. However, the simple, traditional dish Onigiri was always within reach. Even when I didn’t have time to shop, I could still offer freshly cooked rice with a little bit of salt, wrapped in crispy nori. And the kids loved it!

I've been working at the University of Pennsylvania for 20 years and have seen the decline in quality, affordable lunch options for students. It is hard to find anything that satisfies their appetite under eight dollars on campus. We will offer our Onigiri guilt free, made from whole foods quick meal from $3.50 to $4.50 depending on ingredients. I am sure they will be well received among busy students and families.
