Seize The Clay

I am Sandy Wentzel and I own Seize the Clay. Im from Newport News, VA and recently created this business, not only to make my love for ceramics well known but also to share it with others. I was introduced to pottery my senior year in high school and fell in love with it. I can play around with the clay and create almost anything, decorative or applied. What struck me the most was finding out the many different ways of firing the clay besides simply glazing it. The teacher introduced one known as Saggar Firing and later, a professor at Christopher Newport University introduced another process known as Western Raku Firing. Each fire the pottery within combustibles such as newspapers or sawdust just in different ways.

Another thing that truly interested me about pottery was how therapeutic it can be. As someone diagnosed with epilepsy, it helps reduce stress and enhance mindfulness. The repetitive motions of working with the clay also has a calming effect on the nervous system. Its this peace of working with clay is what makes me dedicated to creating my ceramic pieces.
