Broken Shovel Kiwi Farm

n/a
At the present time, Broken Shovel Kiwi Farm does not have large enough crops (e.g., income) to justify the time and expense of being certified organic. Nevertheless, because hardy kiwis have no significant diseases or pests, Broken Shovel does not use any herbicides or pesticides in the growing of its hardy kiwis.

Robert Williams
I (Robert Williams) began growing hardy kiwis in 2011 after discovering how nutritious the kiwi berries were, and puzzled by the fact that these kiwi berries were rarely found in grocery stores or even farmers markets in the northwest. As a result, I wanted to investigate the possibility of a small, 1 to 2 acre, farm being able to profitably grow hardy kiwis either as fresh berries or as some type of finished product (e.g., kiwi salsa). Currently, Broken Shovel has 182 kiwi vines growing on its properties in Burien and Mossyrock, with 10 different varieties growing to help determine market reaction to their differences in taste and sweetness.
