Shochu is the other traditional Japanese spirit, the *not* saké.
Shochu has outsold saké in Japan for the last fifteen years and is the most common thing served in restaurants in Japan besides beer, where it is popular in cocktails called chuhai, sho CHU-HIghballs, shochu with various mixers like sodas, fruit juices, teas, etc.
Shochu is 24% ABV, 58 calories per 1.5oz shot. A typical 6oz chuhai (that’s a full 12 oz glass drink with ice) is anywhere from 58 calories to 122 calories (compared to a 5.2 oz glass of wine at 121 calories), and much yummier than a typical FMB drink :)
