During the Civil War, soldiers began a trench art called “Love Tokens”. Amid the chaos of war, they would find time to hand make something for someone they loved. Each token was carefully carved using simple tools, such as a hand saw or pocket knife & often the last of their pocket change. I carry on this lost trench art by carving coins completely by hand then finishing them as jewelry & accessories for loved ones of any age & gender. Traveling to art shows across Michigan, I demonstrate (LIVE) the same tools & techniques used during the 1600’s mixed with modern designs. I enjoy sharing the history of “Love Tokens”, and how something as simple as pocket change can became a symbol of hope & love in a time of need. My work includes everything from Michigan themed carvings to portraits of lost pets & replicating a loved one’s handwriting. My goal is to bring this lost tradition back to life by creating pocket-sized art that connects people to the past.
