After the founder lost her grandmother who was the most sophisticated, sassy, renaissance woman with the softest skin, Hekima Skincare became a dream. The company started as an idea in 2015 as a way to honor the legacy of strong resilient women in our families from the past. That strength and resilience has been passed down to generations of women now and in the future.
In 2018, HEKIMA went from being a dream to being a reality. HEKIMA was developed after many late nights and early mornings of perimenopause hot flashes, interrupted sleep, and mixing and testing ingredients to make sure this skincare line provided the best quality product with the essence of luxury and love for mature and melanated women who deserve products that are good to them and good for them. Vanita Sanders, Founder
Vanita Sanders founded Hekima Skin Care, a business designed to help mature and melanated women naturally live and thrive during their menopause journey. Studies have found that black women are more likely to experience various symptoms associated with their menopause, including hot flashes, dizziness, brain fog, urine leakage, and worst of all extremely dry skin. What's worse is that these symptoms often become more severe with age in black women.
To address this issue and relieve so many suffering women, Vanita has created Hekima Body Butter—a product formulated using Ashwagandha. This herb contains calming properties proven to help reduce the stress that the skin experiences during menopause. Ashwagandha also nourishes the skin and leaves it glowing and supple, making it the perfect all-natural solution for dry skin-related issues. It is also non-toxic and non-comedogenic, so users can trust its safety and effectiveness.
As someone who understands the difficulty many women face due to her experience with perimenopause symptoms, she has made it her mission to help others stay comfortable and feel confident in their skin. To make this happen, Vanita has teamed up with local product creation labs and shipping companies run by black women entrepreneurs alike; these collaborations are just another piece of what makes Hekima Skin Care such an authentic brand that so many have come to trust.
In addition to being an entrepreneur, Vanita is also an educator with a Master of Social Work degree. As a Master College Prep Coach and Education Consultant for over 20 years, she has successfully shepherded over 1,000 students and families through the
college access & success journey. She has been recognized time after time for her leadership abilities in connecting people and building cohesive communities. She is also the founder of The Dreamers Circle—an online/in-person support group for over 300 like-minded individuals seeking resources on their faith walks toward greater success in their personal and professional lives. The passion and commitment that Vanita has to the personal and professional growth of women that started with The Dreamers Circle have now morphed into an initiative called “The Grown Woman Collective”.
On top of all that, when Vanita isn't working, she enjoys indulging herself by listening to classic R&B music from the 70s/80s/90s eras or attending comedy shows or concerts; she loves karaoke sessions as well as unwinding over chai tea lattes with oat milk too! Additionally, she's a mother of three amazing children and takes inspiration from her parents and grandparents, who have had a significant influence on who she's become today—allowing her values of grace, ease, compassion, and harmony to shine through both personally and professionally.
Vanita strives every day to keep pushing forward, she is guided by her faith in God alongside Galatians 6:9, which reads, "Let us not become weary in doing good for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up"—something she can attest holds true both within her business ventures as well as her personal endeavors. Vanita Sanders is the epitome of a modern-day entrepreneur, and she's just getting started.
