Providence Road Pottery is owned by Ericka Ryba, a Knoxville based potter. She earned an A.A.S. in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales in Charleston, SC, a B.F.A. in studio Art and M.S. in Art Education from UT Knoxville. Ericka currently teaches art full time at Coulter Grove Intermediate School in Maryville and maintains a ceramics studio at Mighty Mud in Knoxville. Ericka creates heirloom quality ceramics for the modern home, meant to last for generations but able to withstand everyday use. A monochromatic, neutral color palette unifies the pottery and allows collectors to mix and match pieces for their own custom collection. Subtle textures and surface decoration combined with various clay bodies add interest and variety to each piece. Providence Road pots will complement farmhouse decor to modern and minimalist aesthetics. I get a lot of questions about how I got started. I haven't always been or wanted to be a potter. In my late twenties I decided to go back to school to be a teacher and decided I wanted to teach art. I enrolled at UT Knoxville and started taking art classes. Up to that point, I dabbled in various types of art making. I decided to take a pottery class because I knew nothing about clay and was intimidated to have to teach clay to young children and possibly fire a kiln. I was hooked from that first class and it's been about six years. I love clay due to the tactile nature, how you can see the form change before your eyes, almost instant gratification of making, but also the challenges and failures that are inherent. There's always something new to learn and in a lifetime you'll never discover all there is to know about clay. I'm always surprised that people find value in my work and I love being able to share that. As long as this keeps happening, I'll keep making:)
