San Jose Makers is an optimistic support team of local creatives and families who all seek the same goal: to elevate positive growth within our communities who’s homes and lives were built here in San Jose, CA. Collaborating with various local artists, markets, small businesses, and musicians, San Jose Makers key focus is to give and share safe spaces that in hopes will introduce connections between others to flourish onto upcoming generations creating a new pattern that breaks barriers to rebuild, and keep communities unified. Already enduring stereotypical issues daily, discrimination, poverty, and injustices, being community members themselves, San Jose Makers seen an even bigger urge for organization for support in these areas. The need intensified into action when the world was brought to a stand still with the killing of George Floyd. Factoring in the Covid- 19 pandemic, the amount of unemployment not being given or properly being distributed lied heavy on the shoulders of many families already struggling before all of this. There was beginning to be less and less boards to stay afloat on in such a demanding and insensitive environment. Unemployment pay was being scattered but not quite reaching all of those we knew were suffering from these circumstances. Options were getting slim as families seen less chances for income as well as being moved out to make room for big time buyers who’s local establishments and businesses success was not on their agenda. Local vendors became frequently targeted attacks forced to face harassment and discrimination in the streets they raised their lives in. Not only this but a major part of income for many of these vendors was taken once the Berryessa Flea Market increased prices to vend in the establishment and was going to shut down entirely. Some of whom partook in events with us have been Berryessa flea market vendors as well. To see the enlightenment, inclusivity, and joy rapidly multiplying at these events only set in stone the idea that this must be a consistent operation within our community.
Seeing just how many lives San Jose Makers has impacted in our surrounding areas and families has truly been the pure gift that keeps on giving.
